Allah’s Executioner: Travesty in Orlando

By one brief act of malevolence, America’s “Fun Capital,” Orlando, has been transformed into a center of grief and heartbreak. Very early last Sunday morning, Omar Mateen, a devout, mosque-attending Muslim, unobtrusively entered a crowded, gay nightclub, called 911 to declare his allegiance to ISIS and its caliph, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and then proceeded to shout “Allahu akbar” (Allah is greater”) while using an assault rifle to mow down some 100 people, 49 of whom so far have died (the rest have serious if not critical injuries). Omar Mateen

While Florida state and local officials were quick to identify this as a terror attack perpetrated by a Muslim and inspired by his allegiance to radical Islam, our President (who presumably has access immediately to the best intelligence money can buy) was much more circumspect. He called it a hate crime and an act of terror, but retreated behind the verbal smokescreen that “We’ve reached no definitive judgment on the precise motivations of the killer.” Hence, not one word on the dangers posed by radical Islam, in spite of all the obvious evidence placarded on news broadcasts.

What would lead a 29 year old man to be filled with so much hatred against blacks, women, and homosexuals to plan the murderous attack which has left our nation speechless with disbelief? Some have argued that he was an unstable personality, and that mental illness is the cause of such evil. Perhaps that is true. Yet there are thousands of mentally unstable persons here and throughout the world who do not plan and execute a massacre against innocents. Clearly, Omar Mateen cited his link with radical Islam as the motivator and justification of his actions. Since the 9/11/2001 al-Qaeda attacks on this country, there have been some 28,589 Muslim terror attacks around the world. Are all these attackers certifiably mentally ill? Not likely. But even if we grant such a faulty premise, what is it about radical Islam that attracts them to such evil in the name of Allah, and why do we not see similar trends in Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc.?

The hatred and violence of Omar Mateen is easily explicable for those who know the teachings of Islam.

His mistreatment of women can be traced to the misogyny written into Islamic law — women have half the legal status of men under Sharia’, their share of inheritance is half that of male siblings, they cannot marry outside the faith (though a Muslim man can), they can marry only one man (while Muslim men can have up to four wives and as many female sex slaves as they can capture or afford), they can be beaten by their husbands if they refuse to submit and all lesser efforts to bring them into line have failed), they can be divorced simply by the oral decree of their husbands for no reason other than the husbands’ whim or will. According to many Muslim jurists, women exist for the pleasure of men, period. It’s not hard to see how such attitudes can lead Muslim men to devalue the lives of women.

His hatred of blacks could easily find its origin in the fact that Islam condones slavery, particularly of non-Muslims. Muhammad himself owned dozens of slaves over his prophetic career. He bought and sold them, gave them and received them as gifts, created them out of conquered tribes who became war booty, freed some, executed others. The darker the skin color, the more likely one would be relegated to slavery, unless the person in question converted to Islam. So prevalent was this practice that even today in Arab Muslim lands the standard Arabic word used to describe a dark-skinned person is ‘abed, which literally means “slave,” rather than the word “aswad,” the Arabic equivalent to “black” in English. That’s how ingrained skin-color prejudice is in the Arab Muslim mind, which then bleeds over into the larger worldwide population of Muslims.

Concerning homosexual behavior, the teachings of Islam as well as the legal code of shari’a are crystal clear, beginning with the Qur’an:

And (remember) Lot, when he said to his people: “Do you commit the worst sin such as none preceding you has committed in the ‘Alamin (mankind and jinns)? “Verily, you practice your lusts on men instead of women. Nay, but you are a people transgressing beyond bounds (by committing great sins).” And the answer of his people was only that they said: “Drive them out of your town, these are indeed men who want to be pure (from sins)!” Then We saved him and his family, except his wife; she was of those who remained behind (in the torment). And We rained down on them a rain (of stones). Then see what was the end of the Mujrimun (criminals, polytheists, sinners, etc.). [Qur’an 7:80-84]

And when Our Messengers came to Lot, he was grieved on their account and felt himself straitened for them (lest the town people should approach them to commit sodomy with them). He said: “This is a distressful day.” And his people came rushing towards him, and since aforetime they used to commit crimes (sodomy, etc.), he said: “O my people! Here are my daughters (i.e. the daughters of my nation), they are purer for you (if you marry them lawfully). So fear Allah and degrade me not as regards my guests! Is there not among you a single right-minded man?” They said: “Surely you know that we have neither any desire nor in need of your daughters, and indeed you know well what we want!” He said: “Would that I had strength (men) to overpower you, or that I could betake myself to some powerful support (to resist you).” They (Messengers) said: “O Lout (Lot)! Verily, we are the Messengers from your Lord! They shall not reach you! So travel with your family in a part of the night, and let not any of you look back, but your wife (will remain behind), verily, the punishment which will afflict them, will afflict her. Indeed, morning is their appointed time. Is not the morning near?” So when Our Commandment came, We turned (the towns of Sodom in Palestine) upside down, and rained on them stones of baked clay, piled up… [Qur’an 11:77-82]

And (remember) Lout (Lot), when he said to his people: “You commit Al-Fahishah (sodomy the worst sin) which none has preceded you in (committing) it in the ‘Alamin (mankind and jinns).” “Verily, you do sodomy with men, and rob the wayfarer (travellers, etc.)! And practise Al-Munkar (disbelief and polytheism and every kind of evil wicked deed) in your meetings.” But his people gave no answer except, that they said: “Bring Allah’s Torment upon us if you are one of the truthful.” He said: “My Lord! Give me victory over the people who are Mufsidun (those who commit great crimes and sins, oppressors, tyrants, mischief-makers, corrupts). And when Our Messengers came to Ibrahim (Abraham) with the glad tidings they said: “Verily, we are going to destroy the people of this [Lout’s (Lot’s)] town (i.e. the town of Sodom in Palestine) truly, its people have been Zalimun [wrong-doers, polytheists and disobedient to Allah, and have also belied their Messenger Lout (Lot)].” Ibrahim (Abraham) said: “But there is Lout (Lot) in it.” They said:”We know better who is there, we will verily save him [Lout (Lot)] and his family, except his wife, she will be of those who remain behind (i.e. she will be destroyed along with those who will be destroyed from her folk).” And when Our Messengers came to Lout (Lot), he was grieved because of them, and felt straitened on their account. They said: “Have no fear, and do not grieve! Truly, we shall save you and your family, except your wife, she will be of those who remain behind (i.e. she will be destroyed along with those who will be destroyed from her folk). Verily, we are about to bring down on the people of this town a great torment from the sky, because they have been rebellious (against Allah’s Command).” [Qur’an 29:28-34]

In Sura 26:165-6, Lot is represented as upbraiding the men of Sodom with the following words, “Go you in unto the males of the ‘Alamin (mankind), “and leave those whom Allah has created for you to be your wives? Nay, you are a trespassing people!” (See also 15:28-74; 27:54-58 for additional renditions of the story of Lot. The fact that this story is repeated so many times in the Qur’an is evidence of its importance to Muhammad.)

According to Hadith traditions (second only to the Qur’an in authority, we find the penalty of banishment from the Islamic community for men who appear effeminate and for women who appear masculine. For those caught in the act of sodomy, the standard punishment is death by stoning.

Narrated Ibn Abbas: The Prophet cursed effeminate men and those women who assume the similitude (manners) of men. He also said said: “Turn them out of your houses.” He turned such and such a person out, and Umar [a principal companion of Muhammad] also turned out such and such person (Bukhari vol. 8, no. 6834).

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Prophet said: If you find anyone doing as Lot’s people did, kill the one who does it, and the one to whom it is done (Abu Dawud 38:4447).

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: If a man who is not married is seized committing sodomy, he will be stoned to death (Abu Dawud 38:4448).

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Prophet said: If you find anyone doing as Lot’s people did, kill the one who does it, and the one to whom it is done (Abu Dawud 39:4447).

Lastly, according to Shari’a law as represented by the Shafi’i school (parallel with the other three Sunni schools), Allah’s imprecation rests on homosexuals: “May Allah curse him who does what Lot’s people did” (Reliance of the Traveler, p17.2). This same curse is repeated three other times in Shari’a exposition.

It is impossible to escape the conclusion that orthodox Islam treats homosexual behavior as among the worst of sins, indeed as a capital crime within Islamic jurisdictions. The popular, conservative Muslim mindset would hail Omar Mateen as a jihadi martyr who will be amply rewarded by Allah in heaven for penetrating the land of the Great Satan and executing such a large number of those under Allah’s curse while at the same time inflicting terror into the hearts of Western infidels.

Already we are hearing from left-wing poseurs that Omar Mateen’s actions have nothing to do with Islam, and indeed that the cause of his actions should be laid at the feet of mental illness, or even more inanely at the feet of conservative Christians who apparently have caused the violent, anti-gay culture which somehow infected him. This, in spite of the fact that Omar was a self-confessed radical Muslim whose religion pumped ample hate of blacks, women and gays into his spiritual veins. Please remember this as your ears are bombarded over the next few days with endless protestations that this attack had nothing to do with Islam, that Omar Mateen was moved by mental sickness rather than by religious convictions, and that Islam is truly a religion of peace which treats all human beings with equal love and dignity.

It’s perfectly reasonable for BOTH Islam AND Christianity to be violently and disgustingly anti-gay. My biggest takeaway from the blog is to reject both religions since they are, like all religions, collections of myths passed down from older religions and completely unnecessary now. We know better.

Please demonstrate from the Bible how Christianity is “violently and disgustingly anti-gay.” Just because you do not agree with the world view of the Bible and wish to treat it pejoratively does not mean it is wrong.

You may take away what you wish from interacting with my blog, but if your conclusion is to reject both Islam and Christianity, then you are engaging in eisegesis not exegesis.

Your blanket statement about “all religions” demonstrates to me that you have engaged in very little serious study of any religion. It must cause you great heartburn that in today’s “enlightened age” the vast majority of human beings are still searching for spiritual answers in the major world religions. What will it take for the rest of us to become as enlightened as you???

Also, it’s becoming more clear that he was probably a self loathing closeted gay man who was tormented by religion and his father and should/could have had a perfectly normal, fulfilled life if it wasn’t for religion.

“more clear… probably…”? Perhaps you should wait until there is more evidence to draw the conclusion you wish to reach. Your definition of a “perfectly normal, fulfilled life” differs from how Islam defines it. According to Islam, Omar lived a perfectly normal, fulfilled life by dying in the course of carrying out jihad against infidels. You may think he was tormented by religion (i.e., Islam) and he may have been, but we don’t know that. All we know is that he carried out this attack in fulfillment of the commands of Islam as channeled through ISIS.

Your name calling of liberals is childish and rather rude. It doesn’t help.

JB, I have scoured my blog for any evidence of “name-calling of liberals,” and can’t find any. Would you please enlighten me. I certainly don’t want to fall into the camp of being childish and rude, as I’m sure you don’t either….

Mateen, I am convinced that there are very smart people in the world who are just plain dumb. Dietrich Bonhoeffer once wrote about stupidity. He said there are people who are highly intelligent but are stupid. Then there are less intelligent people who are anything but stupid. He said in essence that a stupid person is one who has lost all sense of what is right. In the end a stupid person believes light is dark and dark is light. He is so obsessed about his own opinion that he cannot discern between the two. Sometimes many factors enter into the equation. One’s passion is a factor. Religion plays an important role in one’s passion. It can color one’s opinion and change his whole world view. When this happens the outlook can turn out either good or evil. So many people today regard their own opinion as absolute without regard for that which is true and honorable. It happens to every class of people, rich or poor, religious or non-religious, educated or uneducated. Where are the intelligent people today who are anything but stupid?

Mateen, thanks for writing this blog. I don’t understand what really happened in Orlando as most don’t know all the details yet and we may never, however reading this background information has helped me to better understand the motives.
    Hello to the family.

Suzanne, so good to hear from you! Concerning Orlando, there is never a fully satisfying explanation for why human beings can do such terrible evil, but we know when we look deeply enough into our own hearts that the seeds for such malice are never too far from sprouting. Only the new life of Jesus Christ can cleanse and transform our sinful nature.

Hello, Chuck. Thanks for your kind words. As of last October I left the pastoral ministry in order to work full-time in teaching/training Christians on Islam and how to reach Muslims with the gospel. My denominational affiliation is now ECO, but I go wherever God opens doors to teach on Christianity and Islam! Blogging on Islam and related issues is what I do in my spare time….
